Chairman’s Report for 2014
The year started with the club Scale day competition which was a great success. Many thanks to Simon for organising the day. Everyone that attended enjoyed the day and trophies were awarded to Trevor Waters, Simon Psaila, Peter Bruce and myself. Next years Scale day will be organised by Myself and Roy Hill.
The flying Spectacular was again this year a real success the event gets better by the year, we are seeing people from further afield who are telling us they have heard about it through word of mouth and this year we even had a representative from the BMFA who was really impressed with how the show is run. We had a good write up in the local newspaper along with photos. All the members I spoke to really enjoyed themselves. I particularly liked taking Steve Humells FPV goggles amongst the crowd for them to enjoy the view from the quad copter. Many thanks to all those that helped to make it a great success.
The fun day this year lived up to it's name, good laugh, few tears, terrific BBQ.
In September we had the Beavers attend the field for a fun flying session. This was a great success and we had good feedback from the girls, boys and the leaders. There was lots of fun and laughter all round. We also got a mention in the local paper along with a photo. The Scouts have again asked for a similar session for next year.
The club members agreed that we should get a decent patch made. We all know the ins and outs of what's been going on (See the Club Blog). A big thank you to all the guys and girl who helped along the way. The next stage is to get the field rolled so we can all enjoy the benefits.
Reminder that the main field is still out of bounds. (See club Blog)
We also purchased 2 X 1 tonne rollers these are now a fantastic asset for the Club. Imagine if we had been rolling the field for the last 30 years. The rollers can be joined together with a pin, thank you to Mark Owen for making spares.
I must also remind you all, that one of the conditions from the Council was that no planes are to be flown until they have passed the sound test of under 80db and are recorded in the club books. Tests can be undertaken by a Committee member also Peter Scanlon. If a club member is found flying a model without first being sound tested (Helicopters and Jets exempt) your membership will be suspended until you are invited to meet with the committee to explain your actions. Noise testing equipment is available for your use so that you can test on the ground in your own time so that you can make adjustments before asking for the test to be recorded.
This year we introduced Jet testing, which is carried out by Joe Barrington. It has been a great success in making sure that all is going well with the Jet guys.
I would also like to point out as a reminder that any member joining the club after 5th August 2013 are not permitted to fly Gas Turbine Jets.
I would like to wish all members and their families a very Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.
Treasurer’s Report
Simon Psaila, the club treasurer, provided an overview of the club’s finances over the year. Members were circulated copies of the accounts for the year 1st December 2013 to 30th November 2014 for their perusal. The key feature of expense and corresponding reduction in the bank balance was cost of the long overdue and extensive improvement actions to level the field.
Matters Arising
Dave Cook spoke about the condition of the field following the ploughing and levelling carried out in October. The new grass is growing well and we now must wait until early Spring to perform the rolling. Members expressed much enthusiasm for the expected day of smooth take-offs and landings.
Stand-Down and Re-election of the New Committee
We asked flying member Dave to perform the committee election procedure who accepted.
The Secretary confirmed that no applications for any Committee posts had been received.
The old committee stood down. An election for each post was held.
The members voted and the following is the result.
The committee for 2015 is:
Chairman – Dave Cook
Vice Chairman – Joe Barrington
Secretary – Jan Bruce
Treasurer – Simon Psaila
Heli Rep – Dave Redwood
Plane Rep – Trevor Smith
Safety Officer – Adrian Knowles
All posts were won unanimously.
Any other business
Dave Cook proposed that the Club increase the new member joining fee to £50 with Junior’s and Family category to remain the same. A vote was taken and all members agreed to increase the amount. It was also proposed that the Club yearly membership fee be increased by £2.00 to £30 this will come into effect at the 2015 renewals for 2016. All new members will have to pay the £30 yearly fee on joining as of now.
Meeting closed at 21:10
Next meeting will be held on Monday 2nd of February, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. at the Harps Inn.

Meeting Minutes 6th of October 2014
Barton’s Point Model Flying Club – Minutes of October 2014 Meeting
October’s club meeting took place on Monday, 6th of October 2014 at the Harps Inn attended by 20 members.
The meeting was chaired by Dave Cook.
Apologies for Absence Mark Alpin, Vaughan Richardson.
Minutes from last meeting - Minutes from the August 2014 meeting were provided for member’s last minute reading and were accepted as correct.
New Membership Applications
No new membership applications were reviewed.
Matters Arising Fun Day Dave Cook commented on the Fun day that Terry Young had organised in August, It was clear that those who attended very much enjoyed it. Dave commented on extra things that we could do at future Fun Days such as bigger balloons as it proved difficult for flyers to burst them. It was agreed that we should hold another one in 2015.
Sheppey Beavers We had 17 Beavers attend the field on the 10th of September for the Try & Fly lessons. It was clear they all had a great time and their leader, Sandy, was very happy with the session so generously hosted by our club. She also thanked us in a very nice email. Pictures are up in our Blog for September. The event was also covered by the local paper with commentary and picture. Dave thanked, Dave Redwood, Jan Bruce, Adrian Knowles, Roy Hill and Steve Hummel for their help in making this a great event for the kids.
Field Conditions
Dave Cook provided details of progress so far on the field work. The work was agreed in the August meeting. Following extensive machine ploughing, soil break-up and tilling, the field is out-of-bounds until the spring of next year. This is obviously subject to weather conditions and rolling progress during the coming winter months. Dave Cook and Adrian Knowles worked and supervised the operation from 06:00 a.m. on Friday to 02:00 a.m. Saturday morning in order to get the soil level and drilled before the heavy rain which was imminent. Following loose soil clearance by the volunteer work party, there is now a small area at the north end of the field for use by small foam/light construction type planes under tight control.
Those members who attended the Sunday tidy-up and edge smoothing, not an easy task, were thanked. There is still more work to do and volunteers would be appreciated to form work parties over the weekend.
Phil Fearn from Medway Club has offered members the use of their flying site while our field is out of use. Anyone wishing to go to Medway Club to fly must first contact Dave Cook who will phone Phil to ensure someone opens the gate which should ideally be at weekends.
Jan Bruce proposed and members agreed that as a gesture of thanks to Dave and Adrian, the Club should waive their 2015 membership fee.
Club Roller Dave Cook advised members that he and Trevor Smith had located a reasonable priced roller from a Kent company at a cost of £1440 including free delivery. They have inspected the roller and confirm it is suitable to meet our needs. It can be split into two, 6ft long 1 tonne individual rollers which allows them to be pulled separately or in tandem with a 4x4. The purchase of these rollers was approved by members present.
Noise Testing
Dave Cook discussed the importance of proper validated model noise testing prior to flying new and modified models at the field. Members are reminded that NO I.C. powered plane should be flown at the field unless it has undergone a field meter test by one of the committee members or Peter Scanlan, who each have a meter for that purpose. This includes any model that has previously been tested but since has undergone changes in its power plant installation. As this is a conditional commitment by the Club to the Council and the BMFA, any member not adhering to this requirement will be subject to formal committee disciplinary action. As a reminder the maximum threshold is 80db. It is perfectly achievable when a plane’s engine is properly installed and silenced with the recommended pipe or from a reputable custom producer.
Club Christmas Dinner
Members were asked by Jan Bruce and Dave Cook if they would like an arranged club Christmas Dinner for this year. Suggestions were requested regarding location and cost per head maximum. As ever with these things a lot depends on the timing, location and cost when it comes to interest so it was agreed that Jan Bruce would send out an email to members with some basic plans to gauge reaction.
December AGM
Members were reminded of the upcoming AGM and that if any member would like to be considered for a place on the committee that they need to inform the club Secretary by post no later than 1st November.
Meeting closed at 21:00

Meeting Minutes
Bartons Point Model Flying Club – Minutes of August 2014
Meeting
The club meeting took place on Monday, 4th of August 2014 at the Harps Inn attended by 21 members and 3 new member applicants.
The meeting was chaired by Dave Cook.
Apologies for Absence
None.
Minutes from last meeting - Minutes from
the June 2014 meeting were provided for member’s last minute reading and were
accepted as correct.
New Membership Applications
New Membership Applications
Three new membership applications were reviewed; Raymond Hermitage
(fixed wing), Loretta Stringer (fixed wing needs training) and Stephen
Lines(fixed wing, ‘B’ cert). The members
present voted for all to be granted
membership and they were warmly welcomed to our club.
Correspondence
Emails have been received from Phil Fearn (Medway Club Chairman) who
reminded our club of their upcoming Boot Sale/Swap Meet on 17th of
August. We are invited to this
event. Also, there was an email from the
local District Beavers asking if we would hold flying buddy event for them at
our field similar to last year on 10th of September. Adrian Knowles offered to assist as
necessary.
Jan Bruce reminded members of the date of this year’s Love Sheppey event
on 23rd of August, which will include Have-a-Go from 12:00 to 14:00
hrs.
Matters
Arising
Dave Cook requested that Simon Psaila give an
interim update on the club accounts following the annual Club Spectacular. He confirmed that the accounts were healthy
and the balance now exceeds £13000.
Field Conditions
Dave Cook provided details of his investigation
on an effective and economical way to flatten and smooth our flying field. This would be done in the autumn at a time
that the contractor considered ideal estimated to be anytime from late
September. A large central section of
the field will be stripped, the soil worked, broken, tilled and rolled,
followed by seeding. The section will be
plastic net fenced and will not be useable until early spring 2015. Dave has obtained an estimate of around £2500
for the complete job and the members duly voted in favour of proceeding. All present felt that it was time this was
done as it was no longer possible to fly tricycle undercarriage planes or even
achieve no bounce take-offs and landings from the uneven field.
Flying Spectacular
Jan Bruce and Dave Cook, updated the members
on the very successful weekend during which the weather also behaved itself and
there was constant flying and crowds.
Jan confirmed that we achieved a surplus over costs. She thanked all those who gave their time to
do the various tasks especially the members selling raffle tickets. Dave Cook pointed out the importance of the
wrist bands which should only be issued to BMFA registered and insured flyers
with certificate A and above levels and to those members carrying out duties in
the pits such as the slot board. We will
increase our vigilance and observance of these conditions next year.
Members voted to hold the event again next
year. Members expressed their thanks to
Jan and Dave for so successfully organising it every year.
Scale Day
Simon Psaila provided a summary on the Club Scale Day held on Sunday 8th
of June. Turnout was terrific as anyone
watching Peter Bruce’s outstanding club blog video of the day will notice. This is definitely one for the records. Dave
Cook and the members expressed their thanks to Simon for the organisation.
After this, Dave Cook mentioned that next year
we could expand the day to include an inter-club Scale Day with Medway joining
in. He offered to organise next year’s
event himself much to the relief of Simon.
Field Licence
We are still waiting for a reply from the
Council regarding including gate and right-of-way access and camping in the car
park permission in the contract.
Any other business
Dave Cook briefed the members on some of the
subjects covered at a recent BMFA Examiners workshop which he attended
recently. This included BMFA draft
achievement scheme proposals for Multi-Rotor aircraft which will require to be
flown without stabilisation and to complete similar to helicopter manoeuvers.
Flying to music
The members discussed the practice of flying
to music. To ensure safe field practice,
which requires situational awareness and ability to hear cautions from others,
music should be listened to via speakers on the ground and not through headphones. The BMFA defines this as a risk.
Jan Bruce requested assistance from any member
who could show her how to create an email mailing list for her to send out the
Newsletter and other club communications.
Terry Young offered the assistance of someone who could do this. Peter Bruce requested that all members inform
Jan of changes to their email addresses.
Adrian Knowles has been co-opted to be the
Club Safety Officer and will seek confirmation at the December AGM.
Terry Young, mentioned holding a Fun Day at
the field and volunteered to organise it for the upcoming August Bank Holiday
weekend of 23rd and 24th.
There will be balloon popping and other fun flying activities. More details to follow on the Club Blog so
keep checking.
As another reminder: There are still members
performing wrong vehicle ingress and exit moves into and out of the field pits
area. Please keep to the inside North
access strip in and out, and proceed all the way to and turn at the West end
tightly. Special mention must be made that you are not to reverse in and
out. Also, when unloading and loading
please park considerately.
Next meeting will be held on Monday 6th of October, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. at the Harps Inn, Minster.

Meeting Minutes
Bartons Point Model Flying Club– Minutes of June 2014 Meeting
June’s club meeting took place on Monday, 2nd of June 2014 at the Harps Inn attended by 25 members and 2 new member applicants.
The meeting was chaired by Dave Cook.
Apologies for Absence
Vaughn Richardson.
Minutes from last meeting -
Minutes from the April 2014meeting were provided for member’s last minute reading and were accepted as correct.
New Membership Applications
Two new membership applications were reviewed; Terry Hobley and Andy Rose. The members present voted for all both to be granted membership and they were duly warmly welcomed to our club.
Matters Arising
Field Conditions There was a discussion on the actions taken to improve the condition of our field. In support of this, Dave, Pete and Jan have spent much time re-seeding and watering the top soil levelled patches with good effect. Thankfully the rain fall following the re-seeding was sufficient to maintain the progress. Dave Cook confirmed that he had obtained permission from the Council for the club to mechanically level the field during the winter closed season.
Flying Spectacular
Jan Bruce distributed quantities of the new flyers for our summer spectacular and requested distribution to our local businesses. She apologised for the omission of helicopter pictures and caption as those present commented as such. Mark Owen has offered to assist Jan by taking the flyer design responsibility over for 2015. Jan also requested lots of volunteers for the various duties and tasks required over the three days, which includes the Friday set-up. Please advise your name to Jan soonest. Scale Day Simon Psaila confirmed that another attempt to hold the scale day was planned for Sunday 8th June. Although the first attempt on Sunday 25th May was limited by the strong cross wind, all those present had a really great day and it served as a good warm-up for a successful day eventually on Sunday 8th June. Please refer to the club blog for full picture and video coverage.
\ Field Licence
We are still waiting for a reply from the Council regarding including gate right of way including access across to the field along with permission to camp in the car park area. Dave Cook has chased this up again and the issues of the odd non-member flyers using the events field. He recommended that we speak to these people individually and suggest they join our club to get proper authorised and insured access. Also, we must at every opportunity remind people who stray from our rules that their field use and membership are dependent on strict adherence.
Any other business
All members are reminded that the running-in/tuning of engines is to be performed at the top or bottom corner of the field. This was ratified by a discussion and show of hands vote. Please comply. Also, Dave commented on the various wrong vehicle ingress and exit moves he had seen from the field pits area. Please keep to the inside North access strip in and out, and turn at the West end tightly. Also, when unloading and loading please park considerately.
